Qualify For Student Loan Relief: What You Need To Know

Many borrowers dream of reaching the grand finale of repayment: student loan forgiveness. But if you’re aiming to eliminate your debt before the 20–25-year mark, it’s critical to know how to qualify for student loan relief faster through forgiveness programs.

From public service to teaching and hardship discharge, several federal student loan programs can help you reduce or eliminate your balance sooner.

Finish Your REPAYE, ICR, or IBR Repayment Plan

Three income-driven repayment plans—REPAYEICR, and IBR—offer student loan forgiveness after long-term payment compliance.

  • REPAYE and IBR plans offer forgiveness after 20 years (undergrad) or 25 years (graduate school).
  • ICR provides forgiveness after 25 years for any education level.

Once you complete the plan, any remaining balance is forgiven—but note that the forgiven amount may be considered taxable income under IRS rules.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program is a faster route to student loan relief if you work for a government or nonprofit agency.

To qualify, you must:

  • Work full-time at a qualifying nonprofit or government agency
  • Make 120 qualifying monthly payments under an income-driven repayment plan
  • Have Direct Loans

Qualifying positions include employees at U.S. federal organizations, AmeriCorps, and Peace Corps. Be sure to switch from Department of Defense repayment programs to direct payments to meet PSLF criteria.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness

If you’re a full-time teacher in a low-income school district, you may qualify for Teacher Loan Forgiveness:

  • Up to $17,500 for special education teachers or secondary-level math/science teachers
  • Up to $5,000 for all other qualified teachers

To qualify, you must:

  • Teach five consecutive years
  • Have Direct Loans or FFEL Loans
  • Be free of defaulted loans

Note: You may qualify for both PSLF and Teacher Loan Forgiveness, but not during the same teaching period.

If you’ve defaulted on a loan, a federal student loan relief service like Hope Credit can help you restore eligibility.

Other Situational Types of Loan Forgiveness

There are several lesser-known forgiveness and discharge options based on specific life events or circumstances:

You may qualify if:

  • Your school closes while enrolled or shortly after withdrawal
  • You receive a Perkins Loan cancellation or discharge
  • The borrower dies or suffers total and permanent disability
  • You qualify for rare bankruptcy discharge
  • The school committed fraud, misconduct, or issued false certifications
  • Your school owes a refund after your withdrawal

Each scenario has its own qualification criteria, but many borrowers are unaware they could receive partial or full student loan forgiveness through these channels.
